KNUCKLAS COMMUNITY CENTRE
Presentation to Management Committee, 2009. This centre failed to secure Big Lottery funding partly because of the number of other halls in the area and partly because the committee failed to persaude them that a new hall would attract sufficient numbers of additional users.

NURSING HOMES, ERITH
This is presented as work in progress - a full design statement will follow later - but in simple terms the design revolves around three main ideas:
1. Two open-ended courtyards with the lounges, dining rooms and bedrooms of each nursing unit either on one of these courtyards or the main street. This means that residents can watch activity on the street and around the complex whilst also being in a highly secure environment with only one controlled access - the gateway to the outside. The precedent for this approach is to be found in traditional almshouses and also Oxbridge Colleges.
2. Setting the building back from the rear and side boundaries of the site to conform to the 22m overlooking rule in Bexley, or to present blank walls/obscure glazing to neighbouring properties if within 22m.
3. The use of a large open plan space where different nursing units converge, some of it double height and galleried, so that residents are not strictly segregated into their own wings.
Construction is envisaged as a steel frame with a precast concrete flooring system in the hub with the double height spaces. The MCCH building could be timber frame or blockwork with a precast concrete flooring system. It depends which combination of structures the contractor can give the cheaper price on though there are acoustic advantages to a concrete solution as the mass makes noise reduction easy.
